About The Collaboration

All textile designs represent the quest for essence that is omnipresent in each project of the studio. Raw Color listened well to the weavers and investigated carefully in the unique qualities of each weaver. The unique craft and skills of the weavers are united with Raw Color’s bold graphic language. This results in a collection that respects the local makers and infuses contemporary colours and a universally understandable shape language of the studio.

Colour – A philosophy inspired by locality with global qualities

The approach on colour reflects the unique landscape and light of Fujiyoshida. As discovered in the historical archives, night and day were depicted in ekaiki textiles of past centuries. These aspects inspired a palette of day- and night time. Representing warm and bold tones or cool and deep tones. This colour philosophy can be found back in the individual textile designs. This allows to have enough individual qualities each textile but also make it a unity.

Funakubo – Graphic expression to enhance the beauty of ikat

The textile utilises the visual quality of the yarn bleeding effect of the ikat technique. As this happens in the warp direction, mainly vertical rectangles have been applied in the pattern. These show the gradients of ikat at the end of each shape. The subtle details are contrasted with the bold colour surfaces that give the textile a strong graphic expression. The textile is celebrating the skilful combination of printing and weaving that Funakubo has mastered during his career.

Tenjin Co., Ltd. – Natural fibres and dyes to show essence of weaving

The textile is all about subtleties in densities. The yarns are naturally died. These dyes are characterised by its muted and sophisticated colour expression. For each design two tones are combined that are closely related in their hue, yet providing sufficient contrast. The dobby weave are binding the highlight yarn in different lengths. This allows to generate different tonalities with the two yarns. The textile celebrates the weaving with natural fibre and elementary bindings, a combination that Tenjin has mastered during his profession.

Watashou Textile Co., Ltd. – Lustrous surfaces revived by colour and scale

The textile reflects an investigation into the archive. A selection from the rich collection of tie textiles have been reinterpreted in colour and scale. The sheen surfaces of the weavings are revived in bold colour combinations. The rearranged contrasts enhance the depth or invert patterns. The bold yarns invite the viewer to take a closer look to get lost in the refined bindings. It is an illustration on how colours interact with each other. Contrasting combination can become tonal while tonal colour can create a clear contrast. The textile celebrates the high definition weaves that get their richness through the lustrous surfaces.
